Smart meters

In 2010, we moved from Wichita, KS to Naperville, IL. Our son was 10 and our daughter was 6. We immediately noticed in Naperville that they were much more technologically advanced than Wichita. In Naperville, just about every kid had a cell phone, laptop, and iPad. Within a few years, the school district rolled out high-powered WiFi and distributed Chromebooks to all the students. At the same time, we were remodeling our home. Everything we did on the house was smart -- TVS, thermostats, printers, commuters, etc. We kept adding more and more WiFi powered devices within our home. During this time, our daughter started getting headaches and severe nose bleeds. There were times I had to pick her up from school because of headaches and nose bleeds. My husband was exhausted all the time and would have to lie down on his floor at work throughout the day and take naps at home. I was having trouble focusing and staying on task. Our son was having behavioral changes. We never imagined that all these symptoms could be related. Then, when our daughter was 12/13, shortly after the Smart Meter was installed on our home, she had a Grand Mal Seizure. Follow up tests with a Neurologist could find nothing significant so they told us it was puberty and labeled it Benign Rolandic Epilepsy. I dove into research and learned that EMFs/WiFi could cause all of our symptoms. We brought a Home Biologist into our home and cleaned it up -- turned off the WiFi, wired home with Ethernet, covered the Smart Meter to block the WiFi from coming into home, installed Stetzer Filters. We immediately all felt better. Our daughters headaches and nose bleeds completely ended and she never had another seizure. If she is exposed for weeks without a break from WiFi, she will start to have headaches and nose bleeds again. As long as we keep it off at home and she gets that break every night for her body to recover, she is fine. She is 22 now and has gone 5 years or more without headaches and nose bleeds. It only happens if we have WiFi on 24/7 and she is exposed without a break for weeks. There clearly are affects from EMF exposure. Our family is a clear example!

Hello. I am extremely concerned with the amount of toxic EMF radiation that my children and I are exposed to every single day. I am questioning if some of our health issues are related to this EMF exposure- ringing in our ears, heart palpitations, or body aches when handling electronic devices like laptops and phones. Please get rid of the smart meters outside of our homes which are poisoning us and invading our privacy. Remove the 5G towers that are in our neighborhoods and near schools. Children are even more susceptible to EMF radiation than adults. Manufacture headphones that are safer to be on our heads for hours at a time like the "ibrain airtube headphones". Unfortunately, the quality of the few brands that do make them is very poor. We spend around $65 dollars per headphone set and they only last a couple of months before they break. This EMF radiation surrounds us all day in our homes and literally almost everywhere else. Please study the harmful effects and put laws and safety regulations in place to protect us. Make safer products to protect us, too, like the airtube headphones. Thank you.

I am responding from the perspective of a concerned member of the public. Wireless radiation has affected our family and many friends we care about. Since a big cell phone tower and also smart meters have been installed in our neighborhood many people in our community begun experiencing tinnitus, poor sleep, and various body aches that did not diminished in intensity as time of exposure continued. Some of us have noticed relief of such symptoms when traveling to areas with lower level of EMFs exposure. Sadly the relief only occurs during the time away from home and returns to the same level of daily life disturbance when returning to our permanent dwellings. I support HHS taking an active role in examining the potential health and environmental effects of wireless radiation. Questions about human health should be addressed by federal agencies with appropriate expertise in medicine, biology, epidemiology, and public health, and the experiences of individuals and families who report being affected should be considered alongside the scientific evidence. It is simply unacceptable that anyone should disregard or dismiss health impacts of EMF exposure because when there are so many relevant cases impacting our communities throughout our country. I urge HHS to carefully evaluate these experiences and the scientific evidence, identify gaps in current research, give particular attention to children and other potentially vulnerable populations, and establish appropriate federal research priorities regarding wireless radiation and public health. Our family is very concerned about any increases in RF/EMF in our area. We have 2 vaccine injured/ autistic grand kids. We limit their exposure to screens and wi-fi whenever they are with us and we see a marked difference in behavior. We also turn off our devices & wi-fi at night. We have ceased using Bluetooth ear buds and are also looking at ways to shield our home electric 'smart' meter. Please carefully consider any and all expansions of RF/EMF. Thank you

Dear HHS, I worked at Intel on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth adapters. I know firsthand that I can't think as clearly when I'm around large concentrations of wireless devices. No, that's not because I'm looking at a screen; just being in their presence makes me foggy. There have been studies where they measure intelligence with and without a Bluetooth headset, and every time the headset is in, their intelligence drops; remove the cause, and intelligence resumes. That's a short-term effect. The long-term effect is headaches, reduced productivity, and various cancers around the location of exposure. Wireless solutions have no place in our public schools. There's no reason computers, tablets, and cell phones can't be plugged in. In fact, you should require that all cell phones and tablets sold after 2028 include a coupon for a free wired Ethernet dongle and are capable of receiving calls and texts over a wired connection. Every product the size of a wallet and larger needs to be required to have an Ethernet port; that way, everyone has options. Not only that, but we have too much technology in our airways. Older technologies like AM/FM, broadcast television, 2G and 3G cellular need to be discontinued. This will help clean up our airspace a bit. In addition, smart meters were never a good solution, and anyone who requests a replacement should be offered an Ethernet-capable replacement. If a residence doesn't have wired Ethernet, the meter can also connect to Wi-Fi. There's no reason to still have a different radio frequency broadcasting one that gets little use, but is transmitting all the time in any case. Would you please help us minimize our exposure? Have had endless migraine headaches since Con Ed installed 182 smart meters under my floor in the basement. Will be forced to move out of new york city because nobody cares. short wave radiation is lethal. you are killing everyone with cancer and you need to stop it.

I am responding from the perspective of both someone who has been harmed by electromagnetic radiation, and from the perspective as a health care provider. When NY State installed a "smart" meter on my home in Rockland County many years ago, they did so right outside my bedroom window, about 4 feet from where my head was each night in my bed. Soon after, I began waking up early in the morning with shortness of breath and feeling like I was having a panic attack. I had never had a panic attack in my life and didn't even ever have anxiety. I would jump out of bed and run out the front door gasping for air. After a few minutes in fresh air, on the opposite side of the house, the symptoms would subside. This happened every night when I slept in my house. If I slept elsewhere, it didn't happen. Eventually I moved from that house. I now live in Massachusetts where Eversource is in the process of installing "smart" meters on all houses in the state. If we opt out, we have to pay $34/month for someone to come read our meter. The cost of living in Massachusetts is already insanely high and I will not be able to opt out. I have told Eversource this. I have told them I know from prior experience that I know RF makes me ill, and they say these are my only choices. When I educate parents about their children and EMFs, I always make sure that they are aware that wireless radiation is not harmless and that they have to take precautions, especially for their small, young children. Hello, I am submitting a comment in response to HHS’s Request for Information on Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs), Radiofrequency (RF) Radiation, and Wireless Radiation Exposure. I live in Eugene, Oregon. About 2 years ago, our electric company forced everyone to have a SMART meter installed on their homes. I tried to request an analog meter but was denied. I have friends that would not allow them on the property, and their electricity was shut off and threats of arrest until they complied. I was given the option to opt out of the signal, which I have to pay extra for. They say the extra cost is for sending out meter readers, but I have always paid for this service. Since the SMART meter installation, even though I have the signal turned off there is still dirty electricity throughout my entire home, and I have difficulty breathing and difficulty sleeping through the night. I have spoken at multiple board meetings about the adverse health effects of the SMART meter, asking for the option of an analog meter, but am told that I will never be given that option because the electric company owns the meter. I am also a mother of 4 children. One of my daughters has chronic headaches when she is at school. She says that it is from being on computers all day long. We have hard-wired internet at home, and she does not experience headaches when using the computer at home. Please advocate for people to make their own choices with their home environment. Also, fiber optics is used in our home for internet, and it is very effective when used in schools overseas, not exposing our children to harmful EMFs all day long. I have many symptoms that have only increased over time as EMF exposure sources have increased. I suspected that EMF sources may be a possible cause of my symptoms due to the correlation between increases in EMF exposures and increases in symptoms. A surprise experiment made my suspicions stronger. When the electricity at my house went out for three days due to storm damage, thereby removing EMF sources (the smart meter, wiring in the walls, Wi-Fi, cordless phones, digital clocks, power strips, etc), my symptoms were temporarily gone. The constant ringing and buzzing in my ears stopped. The tingling and zapping sensations in my body stopped. My seemingly permanent headache went away. I slept better than I had in the years since the installation of the smart meter (that I did not want on my house) and the loss of my ability to turn off the Wi-fi (due to technical problems). Then the storm damage was repaired and electrical service was restored to my house. With the return of the electricity came the return of the EMF sources and my symptoms. Even without being in a house with no electricity, I can feel differences in EMF exposure in my body. Something as simple as having a digital alarm clock at different distances from my bed affects my sleep and other symptoms. The closer the clock is to me, the worse my symptoms are. The same is true for time spent close to other EMF sources. I have sought help for various symptoms in the past few years as my symptoms have worsened, but doctors have dismissed my symptoms and concerns. The best I can do is reduce my exposure as much as possible, but there are many exposure sources that I cannot control. I know many other people have also suffered and continue to suffer from negative health effects from EMF exposure. An evaluation of EMF health effects is long overdue.
